Get to Know JPC Custom Homes

John Kothrade founded JPC Custom Homes in 1984 after he grew tired of seeing the shortcuts other builders used while he worked in the industry. His goal with JPC Custom Homes: to provide homeowners with a better way to build.

In 2009, John’s son, Phillip Kothrade, joined the family business. As one of the premier West metro custom home builders, JPC Custom Homes focuses on principles of quality, integrity and communication. Our reputation for these principles goes beyond our work with homeowners, extending to our relationships with fellow professionals in the field. We work with craftsmen and suppliers that hold the same principles we do. This allows us to build with the utmost skill, professionalism and quality materials available.

Phillip Kothrade
Phillip KothradeOwner
Phillip Kothrade oversees sales, estimating, and operations at JPC Custom Homes. He studied Construction Management at Minnesota State Community and Technical College – Moorhead, and began his career working as a carpenter across residential, commercial, and industrial iron sectors. Phillip joined JPC Custom Homes in 2009, working alongside his father, John Kothrade, and proudly took over the business in 2025.
Nancy Kothrade
Nancy KothradeAdministrative Manager
Nancy Kothrade oversees and manages the daily office operations of JPC Custom Homes. She also handles the accounting and works closely with mortgage and title companies, homeowners and subcontractors throughout the building process. Nancy joined her husband Phil and the JPC team in 2022. She holds a B.S. from the University of Minnesota and M.B.A. from West Texas A&M University.
Dave Zander
Dave ZanderProject Estimator
Dave Zander joined the JPC team in 2025, bringing a wealth of knowledge to his role as Project Estimator. With more than 30 years of experience in residential construction, Dave oversees project bidding, material sourcing, and coordination to ensure each build starts with a solid foundation. In addition to his work in the office, you’ll occasionally find him out in the field; meeting with homeowners, collaborating with subcontractors, and lending a hand whenever needed.
Tim Naugle
Tim NaugleProject Manager
Tim joined the JPC Custom Homes team in 2026, bringing a wealth of hands-on experience in residential construction from framing through closing. He began his career working with framing contractors before starting and successfully operating his own business for many years. Tim later transitioned into construction management, where he gained extensive experience overseeing all aspects of field operations and managing projects from start to finish.
Rosie Hum
Rosie HumProject Coordinator
Rosie works closely with clients and subcontractors on the selections and allowances for each project at JPC Custom Homes. Rosie enjoys the creative and organizational process of selections with each homeowner. Her background is in residential real estate. She holds a B.A. from the University of Minnesota and started with JPC Custom Homes in 2023.
Jonas Philipp
Jonas PhilippProject Manager
Jonas Philipp works alongside Joel Lemke, supervising jobsites and subcontractors during each custom build. He is a go-getter, always willing to help and eager to learn. Jonas loves working at JPC Custom Homes because of the quality and care that goes into each new home build. Jonas is creative and worked toward an associate’s degree in art before starting with JPC Custom Homes in 2019.

“We are more than happy with our experience with JPC. From the very beginning of the process, it was evident that the Kothrade family was professional, dedicated, and hardworking. JPC went above and beyond our expectations from day one when John and Philip spent three hours outside in sub-degree temps with us walking acres of land, trying to find the best fit for our new home and then working tirelessly with the developer getting us that lot and ensuring they could begin the building process quickly.

Throughout the process, we were continuously reminded why we chose this fantastic builder, as they built us a home that they themselves would be proud to own. JPC’s standard details surpass other builders’ upgrades. For example, JPC automatically recessed our mechanical room, which will prevent water damage to our finished basement if our sump pump were to overflow. They added blocks behind the drywall above the windows for added window treatment support, which will keep our mounts from ripping out of the drywall. And, those details are one in a hundred that add to the overall quality of our home. We could go on and on. JPC is just that good.

Another element that impressed us was the fact that JPC’s subcontractors have been with them for decades, and it is evident that those subs are proud to work for JPC. The subs were always positive, engaging, and respectful to us when we were on site, even when our three little munchkins were excitedly running through their workspace.

The Kothrade treated us like family, not just a customer. For example, direct communication with them was consistent the entire building process, which resulted in no surprises during closing. There were a few changes we made mid/end of building, and JPC handled it with grace and professionalism; it never slowed down the completion date. JPC simply wanted us to love our home.
